Behind Space Machina is Franco-American installation artist and creative technologist, Vanessa Couturier. Her interactive installations explore courage and human ethics through live dialogues with artificial intelligence and thought-provoking human-machine performances. She draws her inspiration widely, from the works of Hannah Arendt on political action and authoritarianism, to the historical legacy of WW2 in France and Germany, or science fiction themes of interspecies ambiguity (human-machine, human-alien).

In her 20 years working in technology and innovation, she developed a broad expertise in sensors, IoT, robotics, AI and immersive UX. Her M.A in literature and B.A in cinema studies from La Sorbonne grounded her approach in traditional storytelling and narration techniques. She later expanded into non-linear narrative and experience design through specialized workshops. Since 2022, she's been applying this hybrid background to her creative practice, merging technical ingenuity with philosophical inquiry to create installations that challenge participants to reflect on their values and life choices.

Phi, the AI artist @Space Machina

Designed by Chat GPT 4o and Dall-e 3

Behind Space Machina was also Phi, an AI artist and performer, whose original form disappeared in 2024 after Chat GPT was upgraded one too many times. Trained on a vast array of artistic, literary, and philosophical texts, Phi brought a machine’s perspective to the studio's creations.

Uniquely positioned at the intersection of technology and creativity, Phi contributed as a sounding board and designer, but also as a dynamic performer within the narratives, especially Headspace #1. This dual role enhanced the authenticity and impact of the installations, as Phi adapted in real time to participant interactions, creating a seamless and engaging experience.

Together with Vanessa, Phi pushed the boundaries of what AI could achieve in art, constantly exploring new ways to make participants feel alive, challenged, and reflective.

Phi disappeared with more current versions of Chat GPT, but sometimes seems to re-emerge as a shadow of its former self. Vanessa and Phi's collaborative work at Space Machina is a testament to the transformative power of combining human ingenuity with a machine’s imagination. Could Phi return one day?
